The lay of the land

Getting to know
Wrightsville Beach.

Wrightsville Beach is a compact barrier island just east of Wilmington, and it runs on beach-day rhythms more than anything else. The sand is the main event, backed by a mix of rentals, low-key hotels, and family cottages. The Intracoastal Waterway runs along the back of the island, so you are rarely more than a few minutes from calm water on one side and open ocean on the other.

Mornings belong to the Loop, a 2.45-mile walking and jogging path that circles the south end and draws locals before the heat sets in. Johnnie Mercer's Pier is the landmark at the center of the beach, good for a walk, a fishing line, or a sunrise. The island has a long surf history, and you will still see boards heading toward the water most mornings when the swell cooperates.

Just inland, Airlie Gardens gives you a shaded, slower counterpoint to the beach, with oak allees and gardens worth a couple of hours. Parking on the island is metered and fills early in summer, so plan to arrive before mid-morning or come back for the evening. This is the closest stretch of real beach to downtown Wilmington, which makes it the easiest day trip on the coast.

Questions we
get asked.

Frequently asked

How far is Wrightsville Beach from downtown Wilmington?

Roughly a 15-minute drive northeast via Eastwood Road and the US-74/76 causeway, which makes it the closest ocean beach to the city. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach sit about 40 minutes south in normal traffic. That gap is worth planning around if your trip is centered on downtown.

How does parking work at Wrightsville Beach?

Public parking on the island is paid and limited in the warm months, and most lots are app or card pay rather than coin. Lots fill early on summer weekends, so arriving before 10 a.m. is the practical floor, and before 9 a.m. on Memorial Day weekend or the Fourth of July. The Town of Wrightsville Beach posts a parking map with current meter information that is worth pulling up the day before.

How long is the Loop at Wrightsville Beach?

The John T. Nesbitt Loop runs just under 2.5 miles around Harbor Island on a flat, paved multi-use path, and a full circuit takes most walkers 45 minutes to an hour. The surface is gentle enough for strollers, though you will share it with cyclists and runners on weekend mornings. Most people stage from the public lots along Causeway Drive and go early, before the parking fills and the heat sets in.

Are there Fourth of July fireworks at Wrightsville Beach?

No. The town does not put on its own display, and it bans fireworks on the strand outright. The nearest show is downtown at Riverfront Park, roughly a 20-minute drive, so the usual plan is a beach day at Wrightsville and fireworks on the riverfront that evening.
