The lay of the land

Getting to know
Carolina Beach.

Carolina Beach sits on the north half of Pleasure Island, a short drive south of Wilmington, and it leans into an old-fashioned boardwalk energy that the other beaches here do not have. The boardwalk comes alive in the warmer months with rides, arcade games, seasonal fireworks, and the doughnut line at Britt's that has been part of the ritual for generations. It is the most family-forward stretch of the coast.

Behind the beach, Carolina Beach Lake anchors a quieter side of town, with a walking path, paddle boats in season, and free summer movie nights on the water. Carolina Beach State Park sits on the sound side, where the Flytrap Trail is one of the few places in the world you can see Venus flytraps growing wild. Between the two, there is more to do here off the sand than most visitors expect.

The dining runs casual and seafood-heavy, with breakfast spots and late-night kitchens that keep beach hours. Lodging ranges from oceanfront hotels and boardwalk inns to the cottage stretch south of the center. Carolina Beach works well for a trip built around kids, or for anyone who wants the boardwalk within walking distance of where they sleep.

Good to know

Questions we
get asked.

Frequently asked

What is there to do at Carolina Beach besides the beach?

The boardwalk runs a Ferris wheel, a carousel, bumper cars, an arcade, and weekly fireworks through the summer. Carolina Beach Lake sits a few blocks behind it with a walking path, paddle boats in season, and free movie nights on the water. Carolina Beach State Park is on the sound side, where the Flytrap Trail is one of the few places in the world you can see Venus flytraps growing wild.

Is Britt's Donuts open year-round?

No. Britt's is seasonal, opening in spring and closing in mid-September, so it is not part of an off-season trip. The shop at 13 Boardwalk has made one thing, a made-from-scratch glazed donut, since 1939, and peak-season hours run to about 10 p.m. The lines get long on hot weekends, so confirm the season and current hours on the shop's official site before you build an evening around it.

Can you camp or drive on the beach at Freeman Park?

Overnight camping at Freeman Park is suspended until further notice, and the town attributes the suspension to beach erosion and an upcoming nourishment project. Daytime drive-on access with a town pass continues, and four-wheel drive is genuinely required, since all-wheel and two-wheel drive vehicles get turned away. Carolina Beach State Park is the only place on the island where you can still book a night outdoors.

How far is Carolina Beach from Wilmington?

About 25 to 30 minutes south of downtown Wilmington, over Snow's Cut and onto Pleasure Island. That is short enough to visit for a single day from the city, though staying on the island saves you the daily crossing on a longer trip and puts the boardwalk within walking distance of where you sleep.
