An indoor pool can make a cold or rainy Wilmington weekend much easier to plan, especially when the kids have been looking forward to swimming. Start with Holiday Inn Resort Lumina for a beach stay, Embassy Suites Wilmington Riverfront for a riverfront weekend, or Hampton Inn Wilmington Downtown for a city base with breakfast included. All three list indoor pools, but only Lumina explicitly describes heating on the operator amenity pages linked below.

The bigger choice is what you want to do between swims. A beach hotel suits morning walks on the sand and afternoons back at the resort. Downtown makes more sense when restaurants, museums and evening plans are the reason for the trip. Couples and friends can use the same shortlist without building the whole weekend around a pool.

Compare the three main options

These are places to start a search, with different reasons to choose each. Indoor-pool listings describe an amenity; ask the hotel about closures and access for your travel dates before buying a rate you can’t cancel. Shared hotel pools also aren’t a promise of quiet swimming or space for uninterrupted laps.

Pool and breakfast information comes from IHG’s Lumina amenities, Hilton’s Embassy Suites hotel information and Hilton’s Hampton hotel information. Choose according to the setting and room needs that matter to your trip.

Shell Island Resort is a separate, conditional option. Its indoor heated pool and suites are appealing, but a posted building-work notice makes it a different booking decision this winter. See the renovation section before including it in your plans.

Lumina for families who still want a beach trip

At Holiday Inn Resort Lumina, you can keep the beach part of the vacation even when swimming in the ocean isn’t appealing. A walk on the sand, lunch and an indoor swim give a family a workable day without needing a new outing for every hour. The resort is also a reasonable starting point for adults who want an oceanfront stay with somewhere to swim when the weather turns.

IHG lists the indoor pool as heated and publishes regular hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. That makes a swim before dinner plausible, subject to the hotel’s current schedule. The same page describes poolside dining as an April-to-September service, so don’t build a winter afternoon around a summer pool-bar photo. Ask about the indoor pool specifically if swimming is the main reason you’re booking.

For kids, the next decision is the room. Two beds, a bunk configuration and a separate-bedroom suite solve different problems, and a gallery photo of one layout doesn’t mean that layout comes with every rate. Match the room name and bed description to your group. If you need somewhere for adults to sit after a child’s bedtime, look for an actual door between the sleeping and living areas. Our Wrightsville Beach guide for stays with young kids goes further into naps, kitchens and sleeping arrangements.

Lumina is less compelling if most of your plans are downtown and you expect to drive back and forth each day. Its beach setting is part of what you’re paying for. IHG also says one parking space per room is included in the resort fee; count that fee in the total even when a booking page describes parking as complimentary.

Embassy Suites for a riverfront weekend

Embassy Suites by Hilton Wilmington Riverfront puts the Cape Fear River into the trip. It suits a couple planning time downtown, friends meeting for a weekend, or visitors who want to fit swimming around convention plans. You get a different kind of waterfront stay from Wrightsville Beach, with city outings between visits to the pool.

Hilton lists an indoor pool, free made-to-order breakfast and a complimentary evening reception. Breakfast can simplify the first part of the day, especially when everyone wants to leave at a different time. The indoor pool offers another option back at the hotel, though you’ll want to ask about heating and the current schedule if you’re picturing an evening swim.

Choose the suite with the same care as the location. Check whether the category you’re buying is a studio or has a separate bedroom, where any sofa bed sits, and which beds your group will actually use. A separate sitting area can be useful for coffee or a quiet hour, but it doesn’t automatically give two couples equal bedrooms. River-view categories also need to be selected explicitly when the view matters.

Parking is a separate cost at this hotel. Hilton lists paid self-parking and valet options, so compare the full stay total against Hampton as well as the beach hotels. Embassy is a useful choice when you want the riverfront location and its breakfast setup; it makes less sense for a trip where stepping directly onto the ocean beach is essential.

Hampton for a downtown stay with breakfast

Hampton Inn Wilmington Downtown, at 225 Grace St., is the option to compare when you want downtown plans and a straightforward hotel stay. A couple can head out for a museum visit and dinner, then leave time for a swim back at the hotel. Families can use the same arrangement, with hot breakfast taking one meal out of the morning’s planning.

Hilton confirms an indoor pool and free hot breakfast. Ask the hotel about pool heat and hours rather than assuming its indoor pool will feel the same as Lumina’s. Also make sure you’re looking at the Downtown property: Hampton Inn & Suites Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach is a different hotel on Eastwood Road.

The room decision here is about beds and space. If you’re traveling with children, check the exact sleeping arrangement and request confirmed connecting rooms if that is what your group needs. Two reservations on their own don’t establish a connecting layout. For friends sharing, decide whether sharing a bedroom is comfortable before comparing this with a suite at Embassy.

Hampton’s downtown location also comes with a parking decision. Hilton lists valet parking and says hotel self-parking isn’t available. Include that cost when you compare the two downtown options; breakfast being included doesn’t establish which hotel has the lower total for your dates.

Shell Island’s suites come with a winter renovation question

Shell Island Resort has a useful setup for travelers who want more separation at bedtime. Its guest-suite description includes a bedroom, living and dining area, kitchenette and oceanfront balcony. That can suit a family keeping a child’s bedtime or a couple staying long enough to want some meals in. Individual suites are separately owned and decorated, so sample photographs don’t identify the exact unit you’ll receive.

The current building-work notice needs an answer before you book. The resort’s homepage says South Tower painting and balcony concrete rehabilitation would begin around Oct. 26, 2026, with work expected to last about four months and guests assigned to the North Tower. That is an expected schedule, and it doesn’t settle what noise, balcony restrictions or pool disruption your dates might involve.

Shell Island’s amenities page advertises an indoor heated pool and says amenity hours vary by season. Until the resort confirms pool access and construction effects for your stay, keep it outside the three main choices above. If a pool closure would spoil the trip, resolve that question before paying for a restrictive rate. The broader Wrightsville Beach hotel guide covers Shell Island alongside other island accommodations.

Choose a hotel that works between swims

Before paying, ask your preferred hotel whether the indoor pool will be open throughout your stay, what its hours are, and whether any work or scheduled closure affects access. If water temperature, entry equipment or a child’s swimming needs matter, ask those questions directly. Pool photographs can’t establish supervision, suitable depth or current operating conditions.

Then compare quotes for identical dates and guests, including children’s ages, with the bed setup and cancellation terms you need. Add taxes, mandatory resort fees and parking, and account for breakfast where it is included. The Expedia links above don’t specify travel dates, but Expedia may suggest dates and two travelers when you arrive; replace those defaults with your own trip details.

Start with Lumina if you want beach walks and a heated indoor pool to be central to the stay. Compare Embassy and Hampton if the trip is about downtown, with swimming as something to enjoy before or after going out. Our Wilmington winter guide can help fill the hours away from the hotel, and the Wilmington beaches stay guide helps if you’re still choosing an area.
