On Saturday, October 17, 2026, Banks Channel at Wrightsville Beach fills with swim caps a little after 7 a.m., and Causeway Drive is closed from 5:15 until 10 that morning while it happens. IRONMAN 70.3 North Carolina sends a sold-out field through a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile ride out to Pender County and back, and a half marathon that finishes downtown at Water Street Park. If your beach weekend lands on that Saturday, the driving is what will change your plans, because run-course streets stay closed until late afternoon and the island is hard to reach by car all morning.
How race day unfolds
Barricades go out downtown at 3 a.m., when N. 2nd and Brunswick Streets close. The transition area at Wrightsville Beach Park opens at 4:30, and at 5:15 Causeway Drive closes. The rolling swim start goes off at 7:10 a.m. at the Hanover Seaside Club, 601 Lumina Ave S, and the field works north up Banks Channel to a swim exit near the Seapath Yacht Club. IRONMAN’s course page calls it a saltwater channel swim connected to the Intracoastal Waterway, with an incoming tide pushing athletes along and water in the upper 60s to low 70s.
The bike leg leaves the island heading north, crosses the Isabel Holmes Bridge onto US 421, loops through rural Pender County, then returns over the same bridge to the second transition at the Cape Fear Community College lot, fifty-six flat miles in a single lap. The half marathon is the leg you can follow on foot, a single loop out through Riverfront Park and the boardwalk, back down Front Street to Willard, around Greenfield Lake on Lake Shore Drive, then north on South Front Street to the finish at Water Street Park.
The rolling start spreads the field out, so finishers cross from late morning until about 5 p.m., and you can watch the same athlete at Greenfield Lake and still get downtown before they finish.
What closes and when, from the beach to downtown
Check the official traffic impact page before you drive that Saturday. IRONMAN revises the flyer as race week nears, and the City of Wilmington posts its own advisory at wilmingtonnc.gov a few days ahead. Everything below comes from the version last updated on August 28, 2026. Downtown starts closing two days early, with Water Street from Market to Princess shut from Thursday morning until 8 p.m. Saturday.
Getting onto Wrightsville Beach
Causeway Drive closes from Waynick Boulevard to the drawbridge between 5:15 and 10 a.m., with traffic routed to Lumina Avenue and Salisbury Street instead, so a normal beach Saturday means crossing the bridge before 5 a.m. or waiting until after 10. IRONMAN says island parking is very limited and strongly discourages driving or being dropped off, and the shuttles from N. 3rd and Brunswick are athlete-only. Paid parking at the Wrightsville Beach Municipal Complex is enforced through October 31, and our guide to beach and downtown parking rates by town covers the current rates and how the Pay-by-Plate system works. Between 7 and 10:30 a.m., roads intersecting Eastwood Road and MLK Parkway eastbound close except for Market Street and College Road.
The bridges and the highways
The Highway 76 eastbound ramp to US 421 North closes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., detouring to the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, and US 421 between I-140 and the Isabel Holmes Bridge has delays across that window. Out in Pender County, Highway 210 West from 421 to Brinson Road is local traffic only from 8 a.m. to noon. The bike course itself stays open, with lane closures and traffic pattern changes rather than hard closures, most signals working normally and officers posted along the route.
Downtown and Greenfield Lake
N. 2nd and Brunswick close at 3 a.m. and reopen at 3 p.m., Hanover Street from Nutt to N. Front stays shut until 8 p.m., and Front Street closes in sections from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Harnett to N. 3rd open for local traffic. South 3rd Street from Carolina Beach Road to Greenfield Street closes around 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. At the lake, the inner lane of Lake Shore Drive is closed from 5th Avenue to Carolina Beach Road, traffic runs counter-clockwise, and left turns are out. One deck to avoid is 155 Brunswick Street, across from the second transition, which is closed to entry and exit from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The other downtown decks are on Market Street, 2nd Street and at the Wilmington Convention Center.
Where to watch each leg
No public street or park is gated behind a ticket, so pick the leg you want and plan parking around it.
| Where to stand | Rough window | What you see | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The swim | Banks Channel, between the Hanover Seaside Club and Seapath Yacht Club | 7:10 to about 9 a.m. | The rolling start and a channel full of caps moving with the tide |
| The bike | Eastwood Road at Military Cutoff, or Market Street near College Road | 7 to 10:30 a.m. | Riders leaving the island in the far left lane toward the Isabel Holmes Bridge |
| The hot corner | Hanover and Front Streets, about mile 1.2 | mid-morning onward | Every runner, early in the half marathon, at IRONMAN’s named cheer spot |
| Greenfield Lake | Lake Shore Drive near the tennis court lot | mid-morning to late afternoon | Miles 3 through 11, with runners passing in both directions |
| The finish | Water Street Park, corner of Water and Princess | late morning to 5 p.m. | The finish chute with the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA across the river |
The swim is the shortest window of the day and the hardest to reach, because getting there means being on the island before 5:15 a.m. and then walking in. Take it if you are already staying at Wrightsville Beach, and skip it if you would be driving over.
Greenfield Lake is the easy pick for watching a lot of running without moving. Miles 3 through 11 loop the lake, and the course enters and leaves through the same tennis court parking lot, so runners pass in both directions. Park in the streets north of the lake before 9 a.m., when South 3rd Street closes, and count on walking in from there.
The hot corner is IRONMAN’s own name for the Hanover and Front intersection at about mile 1.2, where the whole field passes early in the run. The finish at Water Street Park has the view, with the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA directly across the river, post-race food from 11 a.m., and medal engraving from 9 a.m. If you have never been aboard the ship, our Battleship NORTH CAROLINA visitor guide covers the visit. On race day, cross the river before 7 a.m. or after 2 p.m., since the bike course puts the Highway 76 ramp and US 421 under closures and delays in between.
Where to stay on race weekend
Mid-October is usually shoulder season in Wilmington, but race weekend is the busy exception. Port City Daily reported that the 2025 race sold out with roughly 3,000 athletes and more than 7,000 total visitors, and the 2026 race is sold out too, so downtown and Wrightsville Beach rooms go months ahead of the date.
Downtown is the walkable choice, with the hot corner and the finish line both reachable on foot, but the closure ring goes up before dawn, so park before 8 a.m. and plan to leave the car until the barricades come down. Wrightsville Beach puts you at the swim start and inside the one closure with no workaround, which suits a group whose whole plan is a morning at the beach. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach sit outside the race, and the drive up Carolina Beach Road stays clear if you pass South 3rd Street before 9 a.m. or come after 4 p.m. Our guide to where to stay near Wilmington’s beaches covers what each town is like the rest of the year, and Wilmington Riverfest takes over the same riverfront on October 3 and 4 if you are building a longer October trip.
FAQs
How do I know when my athlete is coming through?
IRONMAN runs a free Athlete Tracker app that plots athletes on the course map and pushes split times to your phone as they cross each timing point. There is also a live-streamed finish line camera, which is the easier option if you are out at Greenfield Lake and want to see the finish you missed. Both are on the race’s spectator information page.
What does the VIP spectator pass include?
The VIP Experience is a separate paid package with dedicated viewing areas, VIP parking near Transition 2, a race-morning hospitality area with breakfast, and a finish line tent with catered lunch. Listed passes ran from $43.20 to $264.60 before tax, and pricing can change. It mostly solves parking and a place to sit, so it suits someone supporting an athlete all day rather than dropping in for an hour.
Is there anything to see downtown before race day?
IRONMAN Village sets up at the Aloft Wilmington Coastline Center, 501 Nutt Street, open Thursday, October 15 from 2 to 7 p.m. and Friday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the official store, a bike tech service center and an information tent. Thursday also brings a 6 p.m. sunset yoga session on the deck of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, by advance registration only.
Park once, then walk the run course
Leave the car in a deck on Market or 2nd Street before 8 a.m. and spend the day on foot. From Hanover and Front it is a few minutes to Water Street Park, the course runs straight down Front Street toward Greenfield Lake when you want more than the finish chute, and the free tracker app tells you when your athlete is close enough to head back for.
