Public rides are walk-up, with no reserved departure time. It suits a flexible afternoon when you want to sit back and hear about downtown; leave room in your plans for a wait before boarding. ## Find the carriage stand on Market Street The [operator's directions](https://horsedrawntours.com/) put the stand at the base of Market Street, between Water and Front streets, with a listed address of 0 Market St. Head to that block first and ask the driver about the next ride. Allow time to park and walk over before deciding whether the ride fits your day. A half-hour activity can take longer once you include the wait, so avoid fitting it immediately before a restaurant reservation or another timed tour. Infants and pets may ride free at the driver's discretion. Ask which payment methods are accepted before boarding. Check the operator's current schedule before traveling specifically for the ride. Its website directs visitors to Facebook for dates and changes, and weather can stop service. Calling **910-251-8889** is another way to ask about that day's plans. A posted operating window still leaves the departure time open. If you're visiting with children, handle a bathroom or snack stop before joining the wait, and ask how long boarding is likely to take. For anyone needing assistance getting into a carriage or space for a mobility aid, describe those needs to the operator before making the trip. Don't assume a seated tour will suit every boarding requirement. ## What to expect from the ride The driver narrates the historic-district tour as you go. Springbrook Farms does not publish a stop-by-stop itinerary, so ask about any particular building you hope to see. Plan a separate visit if going inside a museum or historic house is the main reason you're downtown. The short format works well as one part of a larger day. You can use the ride to get interested in a street or a piece of history, then explore on foot afterward at your own pace. Bring your questions, but leave room for the driver to finish a story before moving to the next one. The city regulations, the company's statements and the reporting about a past incident each answer a different part of that question. Wilmington's [Aug. 21, 2018, council minutes](https://wilmington.granicus.com/DocumentViewer.php?file=wilmington_a297f7b905d898368e14a0e9699ccd2c.pdf&view=1) document adoption of the revised carriage ordinance and its medallion system. The adopted changes included watering after each tour or at least hourly. [WHQR's reporting on that vote](https://www.whqr.org/local/2018-08-22/new-rules-for-horse-carriage-operators-in-wilmington) described a downtown operating boundary below Eighth Street and requirements for safety equipment and operator training. Individual tour routes can vary within that area. [WECT's June 2024 report](https://www.wect.com/2024/06/10/farm-responds-following-social-media-concerns-horse-drawn-carriage-downtown-wilmington/) described the city's heat limits as 95 degrees for air temperature and 105 degrees for heat index. These are dated accounts of the rules, not a guarantee that a carriage will run below those temperatures. The operator can decide to stop earlier because of conditions. Springbrook Farms says it gives horses water and rest between rides and lets their readiness determine departures. It also says its horses come from Amish farms and remain with the company for life. Those are the operator's stated practices and mission. The WECT report followed a June 7, 2024, incident involving a horse named Trooper lying on a downtown street. The company said a delivery-truck noise startled him, that he fell, and that he had been cleared and was doing well. Its representative described keeping a fallen horse down while releasing the harness for safety and said horses worked no more than six hours daily. WECT also reported renewed calls to end carriage rides and a petition with more than 1,000 signatures at that time. That account does not establish the condition of any horse working today. Before choosing a ride, you can ask the driver how breaks and weather decisions are handled and watch the boarding area without committing to a ticket. If an animal-powered tour doesn't fit your preferences, a walk along the riverfront leaves plenty of ways to enjoy downtown. ## Seasonal rides and the rest of your afternoon The operator advertises Friday and Saturday evening ghost rides in October and Christmas-light rides in December, from 6 to 9 p.m. Confirm the date you want before planning an evening around either. Private carriage services are also advertised; contact the company directly about arrangements. For an ordinary downtown outing, keep your meal flexible until you know whether you'll ride.
