Downtown Wilmington sits along the east bank of the Cape Fear River, and most of what draws visitors is within a walkable grid of brick and cobblestone streets. The Riverwalk runs the length of the waterfront, past restaurant patios, the old Cotton Exchange, and benches where you can watch the river traffic go by. It is the most urban stretch of the coast covered here, and also the most historic.

The historic district is one of the largest in the country, with block after block of preserved nineteenth-century homes and storefronts. You will find independent restaurants and rooftop bars, live music most nights of the week, and a walkable bar crawl that never asks you to move your car. Across the river, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA anchors the skyline and makes for an easy half-day on its own.

Wilmington earned the nickname Hollywood East for the film and television work shot around downtown, and you will recognize corners of it from decades of movies. Parking is easiest in the decks off Market and Second streets, and the whole district rewards leaving the car behind. Use downtown as a base for a rainy afternoon, a date night, or a slow morning at the riverfront farmers market.

### Is there a beach in downtown Wilmington?

No. Downtown sits on the Cape Fear River several miles inland, so the nearest ocean beach is Wrightsville Beach, roughly 15 to 20 minutes east by car. Carolina Beach and Kure Beach are closer to 25 to 30 minutes south. Plenty of visitors base themselves downtown for the restaurants and the historic district and treat the beach as a day trip.

### Where do you park in downtown Wilmington?

Most visitors use metered street spaces along Front, Water, and Market, or one of the public parking decks a few blocks back from the river, including the Water Street and Market Street decks. Both the decks and the meters are paid, so bring a card or the city's parking app. Rates and evening meter rules change, so read the posted signs rather than going on what worked last time.

### Can you get around downtown without a car?

Yes, once you have parked. The historic district and the Riverwalk sit in a compact grid of brick and cobblestone streets, and most of the restaurants, bars, and shops visitors want are within a few blocks of one another. The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is the exception, since it sits across the river on Eagles Island and takes a few minutes to reach by car.

The Cape Fear Museum on the 200 block of Grace Street covers regional history and holds up well with kids, and the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA has enough below deck to fill a couple of hours. Downtown also has enough restaurants, bars, and live music within a few blocks that a rained-out afternoon usually sorts itself out over a long lunch.
